It's no secret that machine learning is powerful – and yes, powerful in the way it's shaping progress at remarkable speed — but also for notoriously requiring intensely powerful GPUs to run more intensive programs.
And while large-language models will likely write this article better than I can someday, I wanted to break down the best laptops in 2024 for the tech revolution we're now undergoing (while I still can).
I rated the following laptops on 5 main aspects I think are critical to efficiently running ML programs well — memory, processor, GPU, storage and, of course, price.
Best Laptop Under $500
The Lenovo IdeaPad is by far the best laptop for ML if you're on a budget and don't want to shell out over a thousand to get a PC on steroids. The specs for the Ideapad honestly beat a lot of other more expensive laptops that will pop up on ill-researched lists. With 1TB of storage, 20GB of RAM and an AMD Athlon dual-core processor, this laptop punches far above its weight and honestly is a steal at this price. I think the main con here is that the AMD Athlon, while a good processor, isn't the best in 2023, and the Lenovo's memory leaves a bit more to be desired.
Best Overall Laptop for Machine Learning
Samsung's latest 2023 Galaxy Book I think is truly their best yet. This thing isn't just powerful, it's ultra thin and super light. But the performance shines -- the latest 13th-gen Intel Core processor is one of the fastest on the market, and you can even get a 30-min charge to 40% which adds convenience I love. The display isn't essential for my machine learning or artificial intelligence tasks, but it is nice to have such high-resolution for multitasking.
Best Overall Laptop for Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The 2023 MacBook Pro is a difficult one to beat in the market currently -- it's a 12-core CPU and 19-core GPU, and its M2 chip is blazing fast. This laptop is going to be a powerhouse for running AI programs for years to come, and is a reliable computer used by many of the best programmers and data science professionals in the industry.
